Dedicated IP Addresses: Benefits and Limits

Learn when a dedicated IP matters, what it does not guarantee and how to check eligibility safely.

A dedicated IP is an address allocated to a particular hosting account or service. It is not the same as a dedicated physical server, and allocating one does not automatically change application capacity.

Start here

Identify the requirement: a permitted allowlist, an application networking dependency or a provider-specific service configuration. Ask whether the hosting plan already includes a suitable address before considering an add-on.

Understand the limits

Modern name-based TLS using Server Name Indication can serve different certificates on a shared address. A dedicated IP is not universally required for HTTPS. It does not independently guarantee speed, SEO rankings, email delivery or protection from application vulnerabilities. Direct-IP browsing may not reproduce hostname routing or certificate validation.

Check availability before changing anything

Confirm product eligibility, IPv4/IPv6 requirements, assignment behavior and whether the address is included or sold separately. Provider documentation says WebHostingPlus includes a dedicated IP; that is not proof that the historical standalone Cubix add-on remains purchasable for every plan.

Changing an address can affect DNS and allowlists. Record the original configuration, update only after approval and verify the actual hostname/service afterward.
